Frequently Asked Questions
About the Platform
What can I build with Make Modular?
Almost any structural environment at human scale. People are using it to build desks, shelving, bed frames, camera and lighting rigs, recording studios, retail displays, trade show booths, classrooms, overlanding rigs, marine fit-outs, and disaster shelters. The same connectors and extrusions handle all of it. What changes is the configuration, not the parts.
How is this different from 80/20 or other industrial extrusion systems?
80/20 is the metal version of what we're building. It has been excellent for engineers and factory automation for decades, but aluminum extrusion has limits. It's sharp, heavy, requires a saw to cut, and damages floors when dropped. That's why it lives in workshops and not bedrooms. We use a fiber-reinforced polymer instead, which is lighter, weatherproof, and safe to handle without special equipment. The building logic is similar. The material, the access, and the customer are different.
What's it made of?
Our extrusions are made from a fiber-reinforced polymer that's lightweight, UV-stable, and corrosion-proof. It performs well indoors, outdoors, and in marine environments without modification. For higher-load applications, optional steel, aluminum, or composite inserts can slide into the extrusion to scale up the structural envelope.
Is it strong enough for real use?
Yes. Standard configurations handle furniture and interior environments without reinforcement. For commercial, structural, or load-bearing applications, the optional inserts allow the platform to scale up significantly without changing the rest of the system.
Using It
Do I need to be a builder or engineer to use this?
No. The platform is designed so that anyone can build with it. You can buy a complete kit and follow plain-language instructions, or you can buy raw parts and design your own configuration. Both options use the same platform.
How does the configurator work?
The configurator is an online tool that lets you design what you want to build, see it visualized, and order the exact parts you need. You can also start with one of our pre-designed kits and modify it. It's launching alongside the platform. Join the waitlist for early access.
Do I need special tools?
Every order will come with the necessary tooling required to assemble. Cutting the extrusion to custom lengths can be done with a miter saw.
Can I take it apart and rebuild it later?
Yes, and that's a core part of the design. The connector system uses a screw-actuated locking mechanism that allows full disassembly without damaging the parts. You can move it when you move, reconfigure it as your needs change, and pass it down when you're done with it.
Is it safe for kids?
Yes, generally. The parts are light enough for children to handle, and the connector system includes child-safe rounded corners built into the platform itself however, caution should always be used whenever assembling building materials.
Buying
When can I buy it?
We're finalizing the platform and preparing for launch. Join the waitlist to be notified. Waitlist members get early access to the configurator and first availability when kits begin shipping.
How much does it cost?
Pricing will be published closer to launch. The platform is designed to be accessible across a range of budgets, from individual creators buying their first kit to larger commercial and institutional buyers.
Can I buy raw parts, or only kits?
Both. You can order pre-designed kits with assembly instructions, or you can order raw extrusions and connectors and build whatever you want. It's the same way someone might buy lumber by the foot or industrial extrusion by the length.
Do you ship internationally?
Shipping regions will be announced at launch. International shipping is part of our roadmap.
